Today was very hot and we are now rather exhausted. It's hard work seeing a movie, walking through the mall, and eating ice cream! We enjoyed a lovely morning at Wat Phra Kaew, a stunning complex of gilded stupas (chedi) and the royal palace (where the real story of the King and I took place). We saw the small but famous emerald buddha, who is actually made of jasper. We took heaps of photos and marveled at the array of colors, mirrors, and tourists. Normally I would gladly avoid the mall during the holidays, but here it has been fun. While we didn't splurge on merchandise, we did enjoy some yummy food and ice cream. We went into a large bookstore similar to Barnes and Noble or Borders. Interestingly, most of the books were covered in shrink wrap, which meant you had to actually buy the book to open it. We didn't stay long. The best part was having to stand for the national anthem at the beginning of the movie, complete with pictures of the king on the screen. Cool.We ended with tiny-sized Dairy Queen blizzards (I love the portion sizes here!) We were split down the middle on strawberry and Oreo, having avoided the corn blizzard and corn sundae. Sweet dreams, dear feet. I hope you feel refreshed tomorrow, as we head onward to Laos. I will need you.
