Wat Pho and River

A "wow, we're in Thailand" kind of day. Our first stop (after a lively international breakfast buffet that included a myriad of ethnic foods and exotic fruits) was Wat Pho. It was amazing. Truly. Granted, we just arrived in this part of the world, so this style of temple and architecture is still exciting and different. Ask us in a few days, but today was like walking through the set of Anna and the King. I kept looking for Chow Yun-Fat.

Wat Pho is the largest temple in Bangkok, dating to the 16th century. It has the country's largest reclining Buddha, with mother of pearl inlays on his feet. He is 46m long and 15m high and represents the passing of Buddha into final nirvana (he does look pretty happy and comfy). This temple also houses the country's largest collection of Buddhas. There were so many, like little guardians. The entire complex was just visually stunning. The kids enjoyed climbing on the walls and touching ancient relics. Cool. I enjoyed the peaceful statues and assault of color everywhere I looked.

Then we braved the river on a small boat, much to B's horror. She was terrified, which was baffling because she's been on boats before. I thought she was going to either vomit or hyperventilate, but we managed to avobot both. True, the water was quite high, and the boat quite, um, sketchy, but we made it. I didn't have the heart to tell her I was a bit unsettled too, especially when we went crashing through the waves. Miss A fell asleep on the floor of the boat and the rest of us enjoyed a scenic ride through some old and new parts of this bustling city. We saw several homes damaged by the waters.

We had lunch in a mall and rode the cool new Sky Train. I felt like we were in Sydney all over again. I know there is an exhausting amount of things to do and see here, but we are actually just here to relax and enjoy. A leisurely stroll through a temple or two and mall is about what we're after. The remainder of our trip will be pretty heavy on culture, so this stop is truly an R&R.

Interestingly, Chris and I have become so much better at traveling with kids over the years. I have come to truly enjoy traveling with our children. It is so much more rewarding and meaningful having them along for the ride. They truly make the experience more enriching in every way.
